What is your motto?

Admit our own ignorance is the path to knowledge.

Your profession was it a vocation? What are the highlights that built your career?

My vocation was to become a doctor, but my destiny directed me to the care of souls, at least to their well-being. Three women have been able to discover my ignored talent, they directed, advised, encouraged me... My mother, my aunt and Françoise Caron, my mentor.

You were born in France, you live in New York, your family has Russian origins. How do these different cultures have they influenced your career?

All these experiences in the world allowed me to be amazed by my country and especially by the extraordinary craftsmanship that is found in all art crafts. It's very exciting. When we are surrounded by so much talent, we have no right to be mediocre.

What are your favorite materials?

Absolutely everything produced by the bigaradier (Seville orange, orange blossom, neroli, petitgrain ...)

What are your sources of inspiration in creating your fragrances?

Other artists: painters, musicians, pastry chefs, sommeliers... their different creative approaches fascinate and inspire me. And sometimes inspiring muses like Kilian...

You have created the best-selling perfumes (four of his creations are in the top ten best sellers) and you also sign niche fragrances like "Intoxicated" for Kilian. What is the difference in the approach between these creations?

No, there's just less notices to satisfy when you’re working for a niche product where creation is not a democracy!

If we threw in time, what will creation and perfumery look like in 20 years?

I think that there will be tools to help the creation of perfumes such as Photoshop for photo and garage band music. Everyone will be able to do their mixing, so there will be more and more products on the market. But quality perfumes, those who will become classics will continue to be created by perfumers.
